Brace yourself for the iPhone X price and release date that Apple announced on Tuesday. It costs more than any prior iPhone and ships later than expected.

Apple just held its biggest event of the year. And it launched its biggest product of the year, the iPhone 8 – before going ahead and announcing an even bigger one, the iPhone X.

iPhone X: the most advanced iPhone we've ever made. With an incredible new design, FaceID, TrueDepth camera system and more powerful camera technologies than ever before. It really is the future of the smartphone.

The iPhone X wasn't the only smartphone announced by Apple CEO Tim Cook this week. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were unveiled at the Steve Jobs Theater on Apple's new campus, too.

The iPhone X is one of the most exciting phones released this decade – but not because it offers anything particularly innovative or new.

iPhone X release date

  • You'll have to wait longer for it to come out
  • Pre-orders begin on Friday, October 27
  • Ships to you starting Friday, November 3

iPhone X design

  • New glass design that enables wireless charging
  • Smaller than Plus phones despite having a bigger display
  • Easier to hold than an iPhone Plus phone
Apple managed to make the iPhone X bigger, yet smaller at the same time. It'll have a more expansive 5.8-inch edge-to-edge screen, yet be smaller and feel lighter than a Plus-sized phone.

How? The iPhone X dimensions give you a shorter height of 5.65 inches (143.6 mm) and, importantly, a smaller width of 2.79 inches (70.9 mm) vs a Plus phone. It weights a lighter 6.14 ounces (174 grams), too.

What iPhone X colors will you be able to get on day one? Space Gray and Silver will be the only two options available. No gold, rose gold or that rumored blush gold option this time around.

iPhone X screen

  • Rich-looking 5.8-inch edge-to-edge AMOLED screen
  • Debut of Apple's 'Super Retina Display'
  • Quad HD+ display with a 2436 x 1125 resolution

Wireless charging with AirPower

  • Apple's AirPower pad can charge multiple devices
  • Also works with existing Qi chargers
  • Plugging in your iPhone X could be as easy as dropping it on a wireless pad, and that's the idea behind the new iPhone X wireless charging feature.

No more home button

You won't find a physical home button on the iPhone X, or any home button at all. Apple's all-screen design doesn't have room for it or the fingerprint sensor.

Having no home button and Touch ID sensor will be the greatest change that long-term Apple clients should get used to with the new iPhone.

Set up of the typical catch is a swipe signal. You take a look at your iPhone X and swipe up to get to the home screen. You can also  multitask with a swipe of your finger.

Apple compares these swipes to slide to open, which everybody likes. We'll need to try out the new home gesture mechanic check whether the same is true here.

Face ID replaces Touch ID

Without Touch ID, how would you open your iPhone X? Apple cases to have made this simple with the presentation of Face ID.

"It's the future of we how unlock our smartphones," said Apple executive Phil Schiller at the company's launch event.

To pull this off, the iPhone X uses its front-facing 7MP TrueDepth camera and its multiple sensors (infrared camera, dot projector, etc) to map your face. It even works in the dark, according to Apple.

Apple claims that Face ID won't be spoofed by photos, which Samsung had an issue with on the Note 8.  The company went so far as to work with mask makers in Hollywood to prevent even the most advanced attempts from breaking into your new iPhone X.

iPhone X camera

Apple says it has redesigned its cameras, however it stays witmuch of the same specs as last year: You get 12MP cameras with each new 2017 iPhone.

Of course, if you want a double-lens camera you need to go with the iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus, and and if you want optical image stabilizationon both the wide-edge and telephoto lenses, you'll need to purchase the iPhone X.

Animoji

Animoji has Apple taking emoji to the next level, utilizing its 3D face-scanner to mirror your facial expressions on an animal or other creation, like the poo emoji. These look like fun, even if their point is a bit meaningless. It's no surprise that Apple is working with Snapchat on using the front-facing camera to bring new, more realistic masks to its photo-sharing app.

iPhone X specs

Apple has debuted its new A11 Bionic chipset with the iPhone X, and it'll have a six-core processor to power all of the latest 3D games and AR technology.

What does that mean? The iPhone X will be eriously fast, with an 'A11 Bionic' processor that has four high-performances cores.

iPhone X battery life and fast charging

Lasts two hours longer than last year's iPhone 7

Apple gave us a big headline at the iPhone X launch: it will last two hours longer than the standard-sized iPhone 7.

It'll amount to all-day battery life, depending on usage. You can easily pare down  battery consumption with low-power mode in iOS 11 to have it last even longer.

That is significant because the A10 Fusion chip in the four-core iPhone 7 series has two high-performance cores. In case you're wondering, the other two cores we never specify in each are energy-efficient cores – there's no need for powerful chip engines running when your telephone is lying idle.

We won't know the RAM until the point when somebody pries open an iPhone X, as Apple doesn't uncover its memory specs. However, one report has recommended the iPhone X will accompany 3GB of RAM, which is a same amount we saw Apple pack into the iPhone 7 Plus.
