On Friday morning, CNN “New Day” host Chris Cuomo asked State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert if the United States was to blame for provoking Iran into attacking Israel.
It didn’t take long for Nauert to pummel him and force him into conceding that he was dead wrong with his talking points.
Cuomo said President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. from the nuclear deal helped to “provoke” Iran into launching rockets at Israeli forces and citizens.
“Is there any concern that pulling the United States, or threatening to pull it out of the Iran Deal precipitated or helped provoke Iran into the actions that Israel is pointing out now, in terms of missiles that were launched from Syria into the Golan Heights,” he asked.
Israel and Iran have been launching rockets and missiles toward one another in the past week. Iran struck Israel fist, and Israel responded on Wednesday by destroying an Iranian military base in Syria that was housing its missiles.
As noted by The Daily Wire, Nauert pummeled him into submission and made him concede that his entire argument was utterly groundless.
“It’s unbelievable that some would try to blame the United States for Iran’s actions.”
“It’s unbelievable that others would try to blame Israel for this. Iran is responsible for many bad acts around the world. We’ve seen as Iran has provided weapons, money, and all of that to Hezbollah, operating in Syria. We’ve seen as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps operate outside of Syria, as, by the way, they continue to back the regime of Bashar al-Assad.”
“And let me just remind you, it wasn’t that long ago that that regime gassed and killed many innocent civilians, not just once, but many, many times. So, let’s take a look from where these bad actions are coming from: they’re from Iran and not other countries.”
Ouch. Cuomo knew he had met his match, saying “totally understood.”

He then tried to pivot into another question, which ended just as badly for him.
“Do you think we’re gonna see more of that now that Iran is in a hostile disposition; we see what’s happening on their streets; we see them burning the American flag?”
“We have seen them in a hostile disposition for many, many years,” Nauert fired back. “And no one knows that better than our folks here at the State Department, when back in the 1970s they held many of our people hostage for far too long.”
Rather than give Trump any credit for getting tough with the terrorist-supporting regime, Cuomo decided to imply the U.S. was to blame for Iran’s hostile actions.
Nauert’s entire argument is correct: why should the U.S. waste time trying to figure out why Iran does what it does?
Instead, the administration is keenly focused on ensuring Iran stops funding terrorism, attacking Israel, and threatening to blow up America.
Cuomo would be very wise not to mess with Nauert again, as she absolutely embarrassed him on his own show.
