President Trump viewed eight different wall prototypes at Otay Mesa, near San Diego. The day marked an extremely productive advancement for a major campaign promise… ‘Build That Wall!’
“These are the facts of life,” Trump told correspondents at the U.S. Customs border crossing in Otay Mesa, describing the effects of unrestricted illegal immigration on the United States. “This part of San Diego needs a wall. They want a wall very desperately.”
The president pushed Congress to allot a $12 billion minimum budget for the wall, in the upcoming budget debate. He also described sanctuary cities as, “the best friend of the criminal,” urging lawmakers to deny them federal monies.
“California’s sanctuary policies put the entire nation at risk. The criminals take refuge in these sanctuary cities,” Trump accurately commented.
“It’s very dangerous for our police and law-enforcement folks — the smugglers, traffickers and gang members taking refuge. These policies release dangerous criminal offenders to prey on innocent people, and nullify the federal law,” the president continued. “They are threatening the security of the safety of the people of our country.”
In his request to lawmakers, Trump argued the border wall could “save thousands and thousands of lives — save taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars by reducing crime, drug flow, welfare fraud, and burdens on schools and hospitals. You will save hundreds of billions of dollars — many, many times what it’s going to cost.”
Trump reflected on the prototype process, asserting “We have determined what to do. When we build, we are not like saying: ‘Oh, gee, I wish we did it a different way.'”
Each of the prototypes Trump inspected Tuesday cost $486,000, according to DHS. The winning contractor for the project is to be selected approximately June 1.
DHS officials estimated the wall, which will stretch along more than 1,250 miles of border, is anticipated to cost up to $21.6 billion and span over three years to finish. While this figure is a far cry from the funding President Trump is requesting — if anyone can get this done ahead of schedule and under budget, It’s President Donald J. Trump!
Regarding cooperation with Mexico, President Trump seemed optimistic and explained, “We will see whether or not it happens. I don’t know if it’s going to happen. But we have to obviously have a couple of disagreements before we get there. In any event, we will handle it.”
Trump later reflected on the visit:
If we don’t have a wall system, we’re not going to have a country. Congress must fund the BORDER WALL & prohibit grants to sanctuary jurisdictions that threaten the security of our country & the people of our country. We must enforce our laws & protect our people! #BuildTheWall pic.twitter.com/NGqNueukvj— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 13, 2018
